Martin Community,
In Austin ISD, we are reinventing the urban school experience by realizing our vision and core beliefs:
- All students will graduate college-, career-, and life-ready.
- Our organization is effective, agile, and responsive.
- Our vibrant relationships are critical for successful students and schools.
We are planning for facilities that will be needed to support rigorous academics. The average AISD facility is more than 40 years old—not always best suited for modern programming. To address long-term facility usage district-wide, we are working on a Facility Master Plan (FMP), a blueprint designed to lay out the district’s vision for the next 20-30 years. The FMP will look at the current status and future use of district facilities. It will guide the development of future capital improvements and support planning for future bond elections. The most recent FMP was adopted in 2014; it is a living document that is reviewed every two years.
Currently, Austin ISD is in Phase 2 of adopting the latest FMP. During Phase 2, FABPAC (Facilities and Bond Planning Advisory Committee) gets facility options.
Key information about Phase 2:
- November 2016-January 2017; FABPAC received first option on November 30
- Data-driven process that has community feedback opportunities at every critical juncture. The next FABPAC Community Engagement Meeting will take place on January 31 in the Martin Middle School Library from 6-8pm.
- The Austin ISD team and our consultants have visited every school in the district to do facility condition and educational suitability assessments.
- Schools are also incorporating feedback from their campus advisory councils (CACs) and parent teacher associations (PTAs). Martin’s next CAC meeting will take place on December 19 at 5pm in the Martin Library.
- Based on the facility and educational assessments, school utilization and district demographics, district staff and consultants are going to make preliminary suggestions to the FABPAC for items to be included in the Facility Master Plan. These options are preliminary drafts that are not finalized in any way.
- The FABPAC will review the options and decide what preliminary options to forward to the public for comment during a community engagement series in late January. During this entire time however, if you have feedback, concerns or comments, please share those with us and we will ensure that the FABPAC and staff reviews them as they move forward to a final FMP.
Next Steps:
- Nov. 2016- Jan. 2017: FABPAC reviews preliminary options
- Jan. 2017-Feb. 2017: FABPAC approved preliminary options and draft FMP presented to the public.
- March 2017: Proposed FMP presented to School Board
- May 2017: Potential bond package items presented to the public
- June 2017: Proposed bond package presented to School Board
- Nov. 2017: Potential bond election
Throughout this entire process, the number one priority at Martin Middle School is to provide the best education to its students in a safe and supportive environment. To see Middle School options that directly affect Martin go to: https://www.austinisd.org/fmp .
